Americas Human Rights Defenders Volunteer- Mexico - Mexico City

Detalles de la oferta

Directorate:Regional Offices and Global Operations
Location:Mexico City
A volunteer vacancy for the Americas Human Rights Defenders team is available at our Americas Regional Office, based in Mexico City. This position will support the Americas Human Rights Defenders team in a wide range of research, campaigns, communications and administrative activities related to both strategic projects and reactive work in the region.
The opportunity to collaborate in one of the world’s leading human rights organisations can provide valuable professional experience and the chance to achieve meaningful impact on the lives of people around the world.
We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated candidate who is available part time for an ideal period of 6 months. Please note that this position is not paid (although a small stipend for food and transportation is provided) and does not directly lead to employment at Amnesty International. Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own Mexican visa before arriving in Mexico, if required.
We would look for the successful candidate to meet the following requirements:
Interest in and knowledge about human rights issues in the Americas.
An undergraduate degree in Law, International Relations, Social Sciences, History, Anthropology or a related field.
Excellent written and spoken English and Spanish.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, online tools and typing.
Good inter-personal and communication skills for working in a diverse and multidisciplinary team.
Great capacity for collecting, analysing and synthesising both qualitative and quantitative information.
Ability to multi-task and work proactively with minimum supervision.
Willingness to undertake office work like photocopying, filing and archiving.
Previous professional experience on human rights issues or the Americas region will be considered an asset.
The successful candidate’s task list may include the following:
Information collection. Collect diverse information from a wide range of sources. This could entail conducting research online or reaching out to embassies, authorities or NGOs in different countries.
Press monitoring. We monitor human rights issues and developments on a daily basis in both international and local media. Selected articles are then filed electronically into databases and other platforms with important news items forwarded to team members by email.
Filing and updating databases. We have a very detailed filing system, both electronic and manual, which needs to be updated by the volunteer. In some cases, this may involve photocopying or filing documents physically. We require updated information on government authorities, NGOs or international organisations in order to send out campaigning materials promptly. The volunteer will keep these lists updated.
Communications and correspondence. The volunteer will be asked to send or answer correspondence by letter or email under supervision of the team. In some cases, making phone calls for arranging meetings with NGOs or government officials will be required, as well as making travel arrangements for missions.
Amnesty International is committed to creating and sustaining a working environment in which everyone has an equal opportunity to fulfill their potential and we welcome applications from suitably qualified people from all sections of the community.
